Things I learned from Susie Fishbein

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Here is a short list of some tips I learned after going to a Susie Fishbein demonstration a while back:

1) Peeled chick peas = smooth chumus.  It doesnt take long to go through a can of chick peas and pinch off the out layer. It’s worth the effort.

2) There are NO shortcuts on garlic. No one wants to admit this but garlic is always best when fresh. Don’t use frozen or canned garlic. it’s just not the same.

3) Different peppers give different flavors on the tongue. Not all peppers are peppers.  And depending on the effect you want to have on your taster, change your pepper.

4) Tahini is NOT tahina.

5) Everything in your kitchen should have its place. Make sure you keep things in their place – so you don’t have to go looking for something when you need it.

6) “Cook to your eye”.  Use common sense when cooking. Recipes are not always meant to be exact. Use your head when you cook.

7) Don’t deep fry in olive oil. uch.

8) You have to “need” a gadget more than 3 times a year in order to own it.  This is Susie’s rule for knowing when to buy something for the kitchen.  For example, if you deep fry food only for Purim, there is no need to own a deep fryer. But if you deep fry a few times a year – it’s probably cost sensible to own it.

For Susie,  when she does buy a gadget, she buys one for milchig, fleishig, parve for the year and another milchig, fleishig, parve – for Pesach. (makes 6 of every gadget).

Karaoke on X-mas

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Esther and I had a fun filled night in the city which included checking out the windows at Macy’s and Lord & Taylor; eating dinner at Kolbeh; and of course, karaoke.

It was my first time doing karaok, but Esther had done it in the past with some of her friends. So i was just excited to hear songs i knew and didn’t think too much about what i wanted to sing. Here are some clips of esther and i singing different songs. See if you can see the difference between the song i sing in the first picture and song i sing in the second picture:

Moving Forward…

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Esther and I have been putting our noses to the grindstone these last few weeks. There has been a lot of open communication and future planning. Over the course of this time, we’ve setup an online calendar that we can update and observe our schedules and plan activites around our work hours. It’s especially helpful for me b/c i can see my week in a visual format and rocks my productivity levels.

We’ve also setup an online spreadsheet which outlines our budget and expenses vs. our income. This is REALLY helpful since we’re trying to build up some money for a downpayment on a house. Right now we’re looking to buy within 3 years and in NY. But we’re not sure if we’ll be able to afford NY. I don’t get how these young non-working yeshivish couples buy a house in Far Rockaway (which is not cheep).

At the same time, since I know we need a good credit score to make the purchase, i decided that now is the time to see what my score is so i can work on it. It turns out that I checked my score thinking it would be poor (cuz when i was single i spent lots on credit cards and missed some payments), but it turns out my score is quite nice . Woo Hoo!

It takes a lot of planning to build a bayis ne’eman – and not just $$ planning. For those of you who don’t talk to your spouse about your future, “We need to talk…”

We’re most of the way there as Chanukkah is almost over :(

Some of the parties we’ve been to: Strickman, Goldberg, Price, Scorscher (seudas hoda’ah), and tonight we’re chilling at C&M’s place for a light fun game of –> Taboo (and latkes, yum).

What have you been up to?
