Baby boy is named Yaakov Yosef!

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

This morning was the bris of Yaakov Yosef Lejbovitz. Here is a quick list of the kibudim given and the speech I made at the meal. Pictures and possibly a video to follow. If you’re friends with us on Facebook, you may have already seen it all.

K’vaater – Presworsky
Kisay shel Eliyahu – Rabbi Mordechai Groner
Sandek Bris – Rabbi Zalman Deutscher
Brochos – Rabbi Shmuel Strickman
Amidah L’Brochos – Rabbi Michael Langsner
Krias HaShem – Rabbi Mayer Price
Amidah L’Krias HaShem – Mr. Moshe Scorscher.
Bentching – Moshe Price

My Speech:

It is very appropriate to be having this simcha at this time as we start a new sefer of the Torah. Parshas Vayikrah starts with enumerating the details of the korbanos. Whether you translate korbanos to be a ‘sacrifice’ or a means for a person to be closer to Hashem (loshon kirvah), there is something that a person invests in a korban. It may be emotional, or financial. But something is being given over from the person bringing the korban.

We also have this by bris milah – of which the Minchas Chinuch says that “Why did Hashem give us the mitzvah of bris milah? Its to show that just like a person has to take proper steps to achieve physical perfection, so too a person has take steps to achieve spiritual perfection. How does a person take these steps toward physical perfection? He has to go through the process of giving over a piece of himself – just like by the korbanos.

A proof to this (that milah is similar to korbanos) is found in a posuk that we say during the Krias haShem of the baby – ” V’amar Lach B’Damayich Chayii ” – Hashem tells klal yisroel that they can live by their blood. So why do we use this double loshon of “b’Damayich” Its to include two blood related mitzvos that are similar to each other. One mitzvah is korban Pesach and the other is bris milah. Both mitzvos require ‘blood’ from our part. By korban Pesach – there is the shechitah of the animal. By bris milah – it’s dom bris.
** it’s interesting to note that both are the only two mitzvos asei that if you don’t do them – you’re chayiv kares. The reason by Korban pesach is that yetzias mitzrayim is when we first entered into our relationship with Hashem. And bris milah – if you don’t enter the bris of Avraham Avinu (and the RBS”O , you get cut off. If you don’t enter this unique relationship with HK”BH, then you get cut off from it.

I did not have the opportunity to know my father in law as I came to the Price family years after he had already been niftar. But it’s possible to get an idea of a person’s measure by seeing the impression they make on a community and how many lives have been affected. People who knew my father in law have come over to me (out of the blue) and ask “Do you know who your father in law was?” and they begin to tell me stories of his warmth, his kindness, and involvement with the community. They tell me that he gave of himself to everyone around him.

We know that when naming a child after someone, it’s not just a ‘remembrance (Zeicher)’ of the niftar – but there is an element of the child inclining to a similar set of middos as the namesake.
I heard a little tidbit from Avraham Meir Farkowitz who said it beShem Reb Dovid Bender:
We say “Ze Hakatan, Godol Yihiyeh”. Poshut pshat is that this child will grow from his youth to become older.
We find in Parshas Bereishis when the RBS”O created the sun and the moon, the moon had a complaint that it’s not possible for two kings to reign with one crown. And so the sun was set to rule by day and the moon by night. Now we understand that the moon doesn’t have a light of its own. Its light is merely a reflection of the light coming from the sun. Ze Hakatan, Godol Yihiyeh. So too this child – he does not have a light of his own, but will reflect the light coming to him from his ancestors, grandparents, and parents.
We hope that by our son entering into the briso shel Avraham Avinu, it will be merutzeh like a korbon on the mizbeach and that the light he’ll be reflecting is that of my father-in-law OH, who was a person who gave of himself, sacrificed himself for the community, was warm, kind, and loved everyone. And we hope that the RBS”O will helps us as parents to be mechanech him in this derech.

Shaina’s Birthday Party

Here is a video clip (with Shaina digging into the cake) of the end of the party:

Hello from Newport, RI

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Last minute we decided to take a New Years mini-cation in Newport, RI. Despite snow winter advisories, we drove up Wednesday night and will be coming back to NY for Shabbos. We were hoping to go to Providence but the eruv is down so it’s not worth it to us. We had a blast hanging out in the snow, exploring mansions, seeking some crazy beach plungers and just enjoying time together outside of our daled amos. Hopefully more details to come!! Happy 2009 y’all!

Yom Kippur 5769

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

The fast went pretty fast for me. I went to Yeshiva Darchei Torah for the majority of the minyanim except for Shacharis/Mussaf. For that, I ended up in a neitz minyan that started at 6:12 and ended 11:45. no shlepping; lots of singing – nice davening.

Esther stayed home most of the time taking care of the little petchuchkella, Shaina.

Meanwhile, Chaya Melcer (and Menachem) had a baby boy! The bris is on the first day of sukkos in Brooklyn and we hope to be there to share in the simcha. May he be zoche to torah, chuppah, and maasim tovim!

gut g’bentched yar!

Accident on My Block!

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

So it took the city over a week to rip up the pavement on my block until they laid down new pavement. In the meanwhile, some guy in a nice Toyota SUV came flying down the block and lost control after hitting a newly planted tree on one side of the street. A tree on the other side of the street stopped his car:

Not Everyone Thinks Fallun Dafa is Good!

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

I had no idea what Fallun Dafa was until I walked by this parade in NYC. As you’ll see from the images below, not everyone thinks Fallun Dafa is good. Thats why these use banners that say “Fallun Dafa is Good” – because people don’t know it. And that’s why there are mobs of people who are angry and shout out at them.

At least I got to shmooze with some chinese guy who knew what Fallun Dafa is – and he was wearing some cool sunglasses.

Sefirah 2008

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

A lot has happened during this special time between Pesach and Shavuos. I could go on about all the things that has happened, however, I prefer to be brief and let my pictures do the talking.

Shaina is a little over 4 months old and doing well.

Amanda, my sister, came in from Chicago to spendtime with us and her neice, Shaina.

Busy, busy, busy

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

There is just so much going on.

First of all, the crib has been working out pretty well. We give her a bottle sometime before 10 and she ususally sleepps until some point in the middle of the night like 4 or 5. I hear her crying, take her into my bed and feed her and we go back to sleep together. I’m usually tired in the morning, but then again, I’m always tired. I keep telling myself I’m giong to take a day off, but I haven’t yet, b’h. You know, I realized I haven’t got a full night of sleep since the second night in the hospital when I asked for a sleeping pill…that’s why they invented coffee, right?

In other news, we had a big huge fun Shabbos this past weekend. Uncle Shloimy and Aunt Miriam are here from Israel cuz he got honored by teh Neveh Tzion dinner where he is a Rebbe (has been for 30+ years). Then, the kallah, Chanie came and we hit it off immideiately. She is SO cute and fits right into oru family :) . Uncle Meir and Aunt Suri decided to come too, as well as a cousin Marlin from Chicago who was in town on Business. And SR and Aharon and the kids, and don’t forget my brothers. I don’t know how we squeezed everyone in, but in the Lower East side, you just stretch the rooms and borrow rooms from neighbors. ANyway , Shabbos was a ton of fun. Mommy outdid herself with the cooking and planning and there was singing and shmoozing and good food all around. Uncle Shloimy did his usual inspiring with his heartfelt divrei torah and it was so nice to look around and see the nachas that there b’h is. I got to sneak out to MTJ for the kiddush of my friend Teheila’s brother, and that was a treat. Shalosh Seudos was just women, and neighbor Leila and cousin Sheila and Alysaa joined us as well. What a Shabbos. As Adiel said, ‘why didn’t we just have the aufruf this shabbos and send Aharon to Vegas ;)

Sunday night was Abba’s yahrtzeit. Imagine it’s a year since my last post and 5 since he’s gone. :( Almost the same crowd as on Shabbos. BTW, last yahrtzeit, I came home and took a pregnancy test that came out positive. Mamash that night, and here is Shaina Nechama :) . So the yahrtzeit was one of the nicest ones, we had two siyumim, Shloimy and Moshe. Lots of singing. Speeches simple, short, real and heartfelt. And Aharon being engaged was a huge chizuk. Even Mommy said it was the first year she didn’t just dread it and felt like we were really celebrating Abba’s life. One thing is for sure, he is helping our family out up there in ways we never can even know.

On Monday, the three women wanted to go to the cemetary, but we all ended up going different times. I realized that Old Montefiore is pretty close to Hewlett, so I dropped Adiel off at MAY (South Shore) to teach and drove myself. Even though it was rainign and the GPS wasn’t working, I still figured out how to go. Abba was helping me get there (with a little help from Hagstrom maps). Althogh I was there myself, it was nice having some ‘private time’ with Abba. I also introduced Shaina to her Zaidy (even though she was sleeping). From what I heard, SR came next and then Mommy, we all missed each other.

This week flew by — and before you know it, Memorial Day Weekend is here. Big stuff is happening in the Lejbovitz home over the weekend. Firsly, we are getting a very special guest from Chicago — Amanda, Adiel’s sister. That should be lots of fun. We also have Aharon’s engagement party / vort Sunday afternoon. SO lots going on, glad I caught all of you up on most of it.

have a great rest of the week / weekend / Shabbos!!

Passover 5768

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

This year I had the privelege of hosting my first seder at my In-Laws. Even though I had reviewed what was to be done , I had to wing it when it came to singing. But overall, we all had a good time.

I should also say that it’s the first time that i slept in one location outside my own apartment for 5 days in a row. 3 days shabbos/yom tov and 2 days of chol hamoed. fun.

we went to the South Street Seaport where ALL of us (Esther, me, Shaina, bubby, Sara-Rochel & family, Moishe and Aaron – who flew in from Israel) all went on a 75 minute water ferry tour of ‘Jewish NY’. The tour guide shared a lot of stories and information about jewish life in the lower east side and buildings which could be seen from the boat. We also got some great pics of the statue of liberty.

we came back home 3rd night of chol hamoed and got to rest before going out for some more activites the next 2 days. for the last days, we were by esthers aunt and uncle in brooklyn and ate one meal by the langsners. woo hoo.

Now we’re back home (which was cleaned for Pesach) and still havent done any shopping – so we’ve been eating what we could find in the cupboard. Hopefully, we’ll go shopping later.
